As the field of dentistry changes and grows, new technology and techniques are being developed that allow a gentler, and easier, experience for the patient. One such technique is micro air abrasion, a technique to remove tooth decay and perform other dental procedures without the use of a dental drill.
Dr. Nathan Pfister is a holistic dentist in Dothan who believes that dental care should be gentle and that dentists should care for the whole patient and develop trusting long-term relationships. Air abrasion is just one of the treatments that uses to help improve the dental experience for his Biodentist Alabama patients. Rather than using a drill to remove decay, Dr. Pfister uses an instrument that sprays a fine stream of particles at the decayed area of the tooth. As the spray hits the problem area of the tooth, the decay is removed and suctioned away.
In addition to wanting to know if the treatment will work, patients also ask if air abrasion is safe. Dr. Pfister assures his patients that the treatment is completely safe. Patients will only need to wear protective eye gear to ensure that no particles irritate the eyes and have a rubber dam placed to protect areas of the mouth that aren’t being treated.

There are several advantages of air abrasion, including:
It’s important to note that air abrasion isn’t for every patient in every situation. Some patients find that the compressed air and abrasive particles can cause discomfort or sensitivity. It’s also best used on small cavities or damage. For a tooth that has a deep cavity or a person who has very hard enamel, a traditional dental drill may be used. It also cannot be used on dental work such as crowns.
