How many Americans have TMJ? Nearly 100 percent! How many have TMD? About ten million. TMJ is short for temporomandibular joints – the pair of hinges that hold your jaw to your skull. Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a painful condition that impacts quality of life. As holistic dentists, Dr. Nathan Pfister and Dr. Brian Pfister provide treatment for TMJ pain at Biodentist Alabama in Dothan, AL.
TMD has probably been in existence throughout the history of mankind. Yet it has likely increased in incidence due to modern diet and stress. The condition was first recognized in the 1950s. Symptoms were usually dismissed as psychogenic, or fabricated by the mind.
The medical community began to apply some research to TMJ disorders in the 1980s. Treatment usually consisted of:
New Patients: (855) 939-5566 | Existing Patients: (334) 446-3211
Our dentists are often asked, “Can TMJ pain be cured?” It is a pressing question for anyone troubled by chronic or intermittent TMD. Our dentists find that long-term relief is possible by unearthing the cause of pain, rather than treating symptoms.
They use advanced technologies to accurately evaluate jaw function. Three-dimensional imaging gives a high-definition view of joint physiology. Disclusion time reduction therapy, a combination of T-Scan and EMG (Electromyography) technology, provides a scientific analysis of bite force and muscle activity. The doctors use that information to determine the best dental strategy to balance the bite and relieve jaw tension.
In some cases, imbalance is a result of contact points between teeth. These contacts can be adjusted by removing a portion of tooth enamel, building teeth up with composite resin bonding material, or placing porcelain crowns. Old, ill-fitting dental restorations may need to be replaced. Other patients benefit from oral appliance therapy. This small, discreet splint is worn at night to gently reposition the jaw.
