Zirconia Implants Services in Dothan area
At Biodentist Alabama in Dothan, AL, our team of professionals welcomes patients who are interested in restoring their smiles with dental services after tooth loss. Drs. Nathan Pfister and Brian Pfister are pleased to offer a zirconia implants, a metal-free alternative to traditional titanium dental implants.

What is a zirconia dental implant?

A zirconia dental implant is a metal-free, ceramic restoration that is a surgically fixed substitute for the root of a missing tooth. When inserted into the jawbone, dental implants provide an anchor for replacement teeth such as crowns, bridges, or full dentures. The idea behind the dental implant is to provide a restoration that matches both the function and appearance of a natural tooth as much as possible. Dental implants are often chosen because they offer several benefits. Zirconia dental implants:
  • Can last a lifetime
  • Are strong and durable
  • Look completely natural
  • Are non-metal and biocompatible
  • Are non-galvanic (likely the most important)
  • Are a smart investment in the smile
Many other dentists use dental implants that are made of titanium. However, our team focuses on biocompatible and non-metal solutions, which is why our implants are made of zirconia. This material, just like titanium, will help stimulate the fusion of the implant with your jaw bone, a process known as osseointegration. This is what solidifies the implant into the bone and provides strength and durability for the replacement tooth.

Once patients are deemed a good candidate for dental implants and have decided to move forward with this type of restoration, a surgical procedure is scheduled. This is an oral surgery that is performed with appropriate anesthesia and sedation methods needed to keep the patient comfortable. In the surgical procedure, the dentist will place the zirconia implant into the patient’s jaw. Afterwards, time is required for the area to heal, sometimes up to 6 months as the bone grows around the implant to stabilize it. The prosthetic tooth is then custom-created to fit the patient’s mouth, which will be place on the abutment of the implant. For patients who are using the implant for anchoring a denture or a dental bridge, these will be designed and ready for placement when the implant has healed and can provide the sturdy foundation needed for the restoration.

How to care for dental implants

The care for dental implants is relatively simple, unlike other restorations such as dental bridges. Patients simply need to follow the standard oral hygiene recommendations: brush and floss after every meal and visit the dentist on a regular basis for cleanings and examinations.

By maintaining a good oral health care routine, patients can extend the longevity of dental implants. In fact, dental implants can last for the rest of your life with proper care. Conditions such as periodontal disease should be monitored, as this can cause bone loss that can result in failure of the dental implant. Our team of professionals educates patients on the best way to care for their smile after the placement of an implant to ensure optimal oral health and wellness.

Will my restoration need to be replaced at any time?

Restoration need to be replaced at any time in Dothan area
The dental implant itself is meant to last a lifetime. However, the restoration on top of the abutment of the zirconia dental implant—such as a bridge, crown, or denture—may need to be replaced over time. There are several reasons why patients may replace these restorations. They may become broken, wear down, or may no longer match the smile after patients have undergone professional teeth whitening to brighten their smile. If patients have any concerns about the restorations being used over the dental implant, they are welcome to bring them to the attention of our dentists during a visit.

Placing dental implants

At Biodentist Alabama, our professionals are happy to walk patients through the process of placing dental implants to restore the smile so they know what to expect and how long it will take. The first step is to undergo an initial evaluation to determine if a patient is a good candidate for a zirconia implant. Good candidates must have a healthy smile free from periodontal disease and tooth decay. They must also have enough bone to hold the implant in place. Without this, the implant procedure may not be successful.
